Steps Involved in Transitioning from ER Model to Relational Model

  1. Identify Entities

    • Convert each entity in the ER diagram to a table in the relational model.
    • Each table will have attributes that represent the properties of the entity.
  2. Identify Attributes

    • Convert each attribute of an entity into a column in the corresponding table.
    • Ensure data types for each attribute are defined based on its domain.
  3. Determine Primary Keys

    • Identify the primary key for each entity in the ER diagram, which will uniquely identify each tuple in the table.
    • If there are composite attributes, decide if a composite key or a single attribute can be used.
  4. Identify Relationships

    • For one-to-one relationships, add the foreign key in one of the tables or combine them into a single table if applicable.
    • For one-to-many relationships, place the foreign key in the table representing the “many” side, referencing the primary key of the “one” side.
    • For many-to-many relationships, create an intermediate table with foreign keys referencing the two tables involved in the relationship.
  5. Handle Weak Entities

    • A weak entity will need a foreign key referencing the strong (parent) entity.
    • Combine the partial key of the weak entity with the foreign key to form a composite primary key for the weak entity table.
  6. Resolve Generalization/Specialization

    • If the ER diagram includes generalization/specialization, create separate tables for each subclass.
    • Each subclass will have its own set of attributes and may include a reference to the superclass. Alternatively, use a single table with additional columns for each specialization.
  7. Normalize the Schema

    • After converting the entities and relationships into tables, normalize the schema to eliminate redundancy and dependency anomalies (apply 1NF, 2NF, and 3NF or higher).
  8. Enforce Integrity Constraints

    • Define primary keys and foreign keys to ensure data integrity.
    • Implement additional check constraints, unique constraints, and null constraints based on business rules.
  9. Refine the Model for Implementation

    • Once the relational schema is complete, optimize it for implementation in an RDBMS (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
    • Review indexing strategies for key columns to enhance query performance.
